Can We Do Better Than This?

Of course we can, in truth it is actually difficult to see how we can do any worse, right? I am writing this on the 14-10-2011 and tomorrow the 15-10-2011 there will be tens of thousands, no maybe millions of people out on the streets across the World and why?
They are tired of broken promises, of rhetoric over action and the inadequate and costly attempts to shore up systems that have not only been shown to be poorly thought out and carelessly overseen, but, wrong, one dimensional and even for the good of mankind, dangerously destructive. Systems that have quite clearly failed in every meaningful department of providing the citizens of planet Earth the best that they can possibly hope for.
Will people be on the streets in China? For sure, will you hear about it? Probably not, Russia, Ukraine, again definitely, but whether you know of their manifestations will depend upon whether the respective rulers in these countries are wearing their democratic hats, or their authoritarian ones.
Before you feel smug, who actually owns the powerful media outlets in the Western World? The same ruling elites that have so badly let us down, so where did things go wrong, why is the World in such a dire situation economically and environmentally?
A small group of individuals in each country, be they Western Democracies, Arab dictatorships, Ex Soviet countries, or just about any place else you choose to look on this planet, have for a long time pulled the strings. Now sometimes the puppets perform well and other times not so well its a lottery and that is what the people that will walk the streets of downtown anywhere tommorow would like to change.
They want change, they want leaders with the heart of a lion, the compassion of Gandhi, the brain of Einstein and the courage of El Sid, is that a naive and unrealistic hope? I believe not, why should it be, the World is made up of what, seven billion people, that’s quite a potential pool of resources, no?
There will be many people amongst this pool of human resources many people with the attributes listed above, but here is the rub, they will not know the right people, or have an impressive bank balance. They were never in the KGB, they never knew Rockefeller or whoever are currently the current God,s of Wall St, they do not know the right people!
Well the “right people” have not done very well have they, and I,m being kind here. The right people have done appallingly badly, have led the human race down a Cull-De-sac called armageddon.
They have practised unsustainable pursuits in every department to the nth degree and why, the people cracking the whips are neither longsighted, interested, or aware of the whole and complete picture, for them “me ism” rules supreme, as they have for the past hundred years ripped up, killed, chopped down, dug up and poured poison into any project or scheme that will make a buck and the guys with the keys to the money boxes? They live in a different World to the rest of us, they buy long, they buy short, one was recently quoted as proudly exclaiming how much he loves recessions, how much money he can make from them!
If there is any poetic justice he will trip over some poor homeless person in the street and break his nose, but it is doubtful that where he lives the police tolerate vagrants.
So what can positively come from tomorrows universal actions. With luck a feeling of “Yes we can”, no not yes we can make great PR, but yes we can change things, have a spring clean of our collective consciousness and find leaders that can and should lead, not for personal reasons, but because they can clearly see the problems and have the courage, intelligence, determination and compassion for their fellow man to set about change.
