Where Do We Go From Here?

If ever there was a moment in time that cried out for noble and selfless leadership Worldwide, surely this must be the moment. The new millennium has heralded a plethora of problems and questions about the very fundamentals upon which civilisation as we now know it is based.
What has gone wrong? In truth it would be easier to answer the question of what collective accomplishments we the human race have actually got right and can be justly proud of and that is the sad and sorry truth and unfortunately at just the moment that the World is desperate for noble, selfless and just statesmanship the ruling elites are held by many to be untrustworthy, self serving egotistical and selfish careerists that in truth care little for the plight of the people that they claim to lead.
A long time ago a young and inspired poet suggested that “don’t follow leaders and pay the parking meters”. Which translates as more or less, do not honour these leaders, but take care to follow scrupulously whatever laws they may instigate. Sadly this young and inspired poet became both successful and rich and soon lost his vision.
We do not need to dwell too much on what problems face the human race in the 21st century, simply because they are legion, but in brief the two dominant forms of governance as practised, Communism and Capitalism have proved in equal measure to be corrupt and for the peoples they wished to lead, unfair and unjust and the common denominator between these seemingly diametrically opposed systems?
Disappointingly it can be summoned up in few words, greed, corruption and self removal from the very peoples that they choose to lead. Why is it that seemingly the only people that crave the power of leadership over the “common man”, are the very people that should not be allowed within a million miles of such a position?
Is there a better way, is there a way that the rich spoils that we have been collectively given here upon planet earth can be more fairly distributed and shared amongst its inhabitants? Yes of course there is, but it is going to take a major and I mean very major shift of collective thinking as to how we select and choose our leaders.
There is another tier of leadership Worldwide, an unelected tier of humanity that wields as much and in some cases even more power and influence than our seemingly very limited choice of politicians that seem to be perpetually engaged in a perverse game of musical chairs, the power brokers. Who are the power brokers and how did they arrive at the positions of power that they now enjoy? They got there by whatever means it took and in short it is very doubtful that we would find very much inspiration within their climb to the top of whatever pile they happen to be sat upon.
The World desperately needs a reappraisal, or a reset right now, we have effectively taken the wrong turn and made the wrong decisions at just about every step of the way. Our way of life, at least in the developed World is, it becomes clearer by the day, both unsustainable and environmentally a disaster. The economic policies that have been used to steer the good ship “Human Race” have been shown to be no more than a “mirage in the sand” and sadly the very people that we hope are going to fix all of these problems are the very people that led us down this blind alley in the first place!
We are quite clearly going to have to find a new and different way to select our leaders and perhaps of equal importance, if we hope to have any meaningful Democracy we are going to have to find a way to separate our elected leaders from the unelected “Power Brokers” and “Money Movers”. Why? Simply because only by a fluke of luck will these people have any interest in the welfare of there fellow man, how can they, they will be occupied 24/7 in retaining their position of power, satisfying their shareholders and safe guarding the collective interest of whatever dung heap they happen to be sat upon.
As a very hypothetical example and I will take the USA for this example, John Doe an educated and sensitive man can see the inequality and unfairness within the society he has been born into and through completely selfless motives wishes to stand as “President of the USA”. He agrees neither with the mindset, nor the mentality of the two dominant political parties and in fact believes that they are both equally in error, so he will stand as an independent.
His chances of success, irrespective of his idea´s and the purity of his intentions to actually improve the lot of his fellow man and ensure that the wealth and opportunity that he can see quite clearly exists within his country is shared more justly is what?
It has taken us how long to evolve to the point that we are at right now? From primordial sludge within a soup of potential life up to what, the latest iPod and where are we at? Well apart from the fact that we are destroying the very planet we live upon, that the arguable country that holds the title of the “cradle of civilisation” has recently been classified as junk by people that live a one dimensional existence and the fact that most of the western world is now effectively Bankrupt, we are doing just great! It could be argued that we end up with the leaders we deserve.......
Well written. With your usual passion. You cover some very difficult ground, but do so effectively.Thank you. I take the liberty of sharing my observations here and I guess I hope to stimulate some positive and creative considerations.....
Were I an prognosticator, and I'm not, my best advice to us would be to bend over, tuck our heads between our legs and kiss our sweet tushies bye bye.:-) Too many people in the world already that we apparently don't have the wherewithal to clothe, house, and feed, so it's probably going to get a lot worse before it gets any better..at least I doubt that more peaceful means will be found to wrest more of our world's resources from the one's currently in control of it. Whatever it is I just hope for our children's and grandchildren's sake that the thinkers win the day and not the brawlers because they're the one's that we're going to leave this beautiful blue ball in the sky to. Our generation? Hope our final chapter is better than our last few.I feel that we share similar observations, but very different conclussions David. Now it might well be that I am excessively hopeful, or that you are excessively pessimistic, who knows, but I do believe that the indentification of a problem is a very valuable first step, irrespective of how difficult any remedial steps might be.
There are some very encouraging and positive movements springing to life amongst the ruins of the ill conceived economic union of Europe and instigated in general by educated and disillusioned young people. You might take some encouragement from their ideas and ideals David. Here is a link http://blog.confidentialmatchmakers.com/?p=929
All you have to do to see the problem is take inventory of the various ways the rich and stupid are worshiped by the bleating masses, i.e. Paris Hilton, Kardashian, and practically any politician.
Too many people would rather watch the un-reality of celebrities than live their own lives.
Great article, nicely done.Yes, it is strange.
