The Middle East Uprising.

Right now bravery and heroics are taking place in the Middle East as peoples throughout the Arab kingdoms are setting aside their fear in their struggle for more just systems and the chance to lead a more dignified life.

What did it take to overcome their fear and lethargy and confront the self proclaimed rulers? A spark, just a spark was all it took for a seemingly gathering momentum to sweep as a tidal wave across country after country.

That spark was quite possibly a humble street vendor in Tunisia, a highly educated man with no, or very little future within his own country, trying to make some kind of a living on the streets of Tunisia by selling his wares.

The straw that broke the camels back? He was told to move on by a policeman and even worse, his meagre goods, the goods that represented his one chance to achieve at least a modicum of dignity, were confiscated.

He clearly was broken, finished and tired of his daily battle against seemingly impossible odds to survive within a society within which he had no value, no future and at the end, no hope. He gave up, he had reached the limits of endurance and set himself alight, martyred himself and seemingly that was all it took for sufficient of his fellow countrymen to overcome their fear and say enough is enough. We can take no more.

Undoubtedly the ruler of the country, if he could relive his time again would seek out that tired man and offer him one of his many millions of dollars, but life is not so and now the peoples of so many diverse countries across the region are collectively telling the ruling elites, we have had enough, we want justice, fairness and the chance to lead a decent life.

Once people no longer fear their fear, inspiring feats of individual and collective bravery transpire. The reality suddenly becomes apparent, that “we are many and they are few”. It no longer matters that these ruling elites are rich beyond the dreams of avarice”. It no longer matters that within the employ of these ruling elites are remarkably well armed forces, complacent in their street power to enforce the corrupt and selfish wishes of their masters. They are ultimately few and the downtrodden are many.

The repercussions of the events taking place across the Arab world could have resounding and long lasting effects across the world. Once fear has been overcome just how many selfish and corrupt individuals will become aware that their wealth and power may not be enough to protect them from the wrath of the peoples, united in their weary struggle to survive.

Many individuals worldwide will be watching anxiously the events unfolding across the Middle East and not only the remaining tyrants and tin pot dictators scattered across the planet. No even in the “democratic countries” of the west many people are tired, are weary. Many people have been hammered by a very severe economic crisis that it would seem was brought about by a very small minority of wheelers and dealers that felt that enough was never enough.

Entire nations, Ireland being a perfect example, will now spend years trying to pay back losses that are effectively telephone numbers, caused and created by an incredibly small percentage of that population that do not seem to have personally suffered as a result. To add insult to injury, many of the individuals behind the near financial Armageddon feel they qualify for bonuses!

It will be an ironic twist of fate if the downtrodden peoples from the Arab world, actually teach the world the true meaning of democracy.

Great article, though I wonder if true democracy will prevail- or will war against democracy flourish?

I think it will be very difficult, if not impossible for the old guard to roll back what seema to have been a collective awakening. The genie is out of the box, now.

Ireland sounds a whole lot like America. Must have gone to the same school of economics that teaches steal what we can, leave nothing for anybody else, then ask for bonuses for achieving such wonderful results. Hmm.

And this is a highly respected profession of great social standing! Seems that we in the west need to wipe the sleep from our eyes also.

I just wonder if this uprising is also against the outdated principles of Islam. Especially, I notice Islamic women are fighting for their rights to equality. I think it is a mix of various oppressions which started mainly due to religious fundamentalism and people are slowly beginning to question the very foundation.

Yes it seems that we are witnessing more of a collective revelation, than a revolution. People have woken up!

I think that's exactly what is happening - people from the Arab world are teaching us about democracy! It's so amazing, I've just posted an article with the same theme. I enjoyed yours, thanks.

I cross my fingers, things have become very difficult right now. The latest manifestation of the awakening has collided with a delusional mad man and has become war.

It's kind of you to write an article like this for people struggling like the man you wrote of. I hope one day everywhere, with the help of people like yourself who care, that the whole world will be fair and peaceful.

Thanks for your input Sydney. I guess I am an eternal optimist in that I believe that right will always ultimately overcome might.
