Who Are You?

Have you ever wondered who you are, what you are, or why you are? I know that many feel that these are foolish and unanswerable questions, but I beg to disagree, these are in fact questions that are fundamental to our very being.
So who are we? Actually it is quite easy to run through a process of elimination as to what we are not, so maybe this is a good place to begin! Many parts of us are expendable in so far as they will not effect our self identity, the "I am" John Doe.
No inside of us is if you like a seat of power, an "I am" and that "I am" is the very core of our being. If you can imagine your body as a car (I leave the choice of car to you, but me, I,d like to think I am a go anywhere 4x4, sorry I digress) the "I am" is actually the driver. Not our mind, intellect, or well sculptured 6 pack abdomen.
Why should we bother to even consider this question? Because without at least some understanding of the answer we are as a driverless car, out of control and with no direction. Sadly that is in many ways the human condition right now and it is why we are collectively making so many mistakes and why we the human race keep taking the wrong path, the wrong way.
Actually it is not so much that we keep getting it wrong, it is more a case of not really knowing what is right!
Each and every one of us has awesome potential just awaiting for an opportunity to be utilised, waiting for a chance to shine. The Buddha told his followers that we are each of us potentially God and that we know everything. Well if the "I am", or the driver within us is a spark of God then clearly what he taught is true, correct. Is that not something incredible?
How to allow that "I am", spirit, or soul to shine through? There are and have been through the ages teachers that have tried to share this knowledge with us and many devoted their entire lives in trying.
I do know that in many ways we are the obstacle to the realisation of this knowledge and that we have to step out of the way. By that I mean the self identity, image, that we have developed, crafted and created for ourselves and built up during our lives.
Within each of us the who we really are, is waiting very patiently to shine through, actually it has all the time in the world!

It's funny, more people seem to be questioning these things now more than ever before. Don't you think we are in a period where people have become more disconnected from themselves than ever before. We've got so lost in chasing material things, money, fame, power, and thinking that latest gadget can make us truely happy. Give me a break! All it's done is take us further away from the only thing that's real to us. We wonder who we are, where we come from, because we've touch with it. Hello! Wake up call world!!! We are destroying ourselves through seeking fulfillment in things outside ourselves, when the true gift has been there deep down inside all along. I have nothing more to say.Perceptive observations Peter and yes you are right. Only I would say that the pressures to conform, buy, buy, buy and compete are probably greater than ever before. I mean they are even telling us that using the right toothpaste can be utopian!
We are effectively on a road to nowhere, the only difference right now is that we are travelling much faster! You said plenty Peter! Good.
In my young age, Your article made me think that I do not know, I am the spirit, or soul to shine through it. While I am not the human body, but the driver of the human body at work and enjoy many things in this world. Perhapes my enjoyment and misery in this world shall be as per my karma destined. If we are very fortunate there need be no separation. We are born as a complete individual and each of us has the opportunity to realise our completeness.
Terrence, thank you for a great perspective on living and life itself. God is everywhere, including in us. That's why when our life is done here, we continue to live through Him and He through Us.Your faith is inspirational Robert.
Nicely done. One of the keys is to get rid of all of the things in life (those 'other things') which take us away from ourselves. Kind of like an external detox. Do we really need all of these wide-screen, 9G, GPS-enabled, instant-access gadgets? The things, stuff are not the question. It is our relationship with them. Do we simply use them, or do we really need them!
I think that finding out how you are is very important to your well being. It shows that you have a purpose in life.It might even be the reason we are here!
Terrence, I am kind of going through all this right now. I'm coming to the conclusion that it's all good and I'm right where I should be. Good article! One of lifes little twists is that most of us are far more open, curious and thirsty for knowledge when we face difficulties. When we are deliriously happy we are often equally deiriously blinkered.
Buddha was very influential specially in the east. I just don't know why statues of him are so big with many children like Abraham. He wasn't married thought. And because of renunciation , he probably ate sparingly and was not too big.I do not know anything about the diet of Buddha, or his marital status, sorry.
