The Potential We Each Share
How often have you heard someone say "What can I do", or how can I affect anything? It is a very commonly shared sentiment of impotence, but actually you and each one of us can do a lot and have an effect more far reaching than we realise.
Maybe you have heard the hypothetical questions, can the effect of the flapping of a butterflies wings in Australia be felt in Europe. Will a head on collision between a fly and a train affect the speed of the train? Well the answer to both questions is yes, microscopically and almost immeasurably, but yes.
I am not a fan of quoting others but the words of Ghandi express the reality for all of us so well "Be the change you wish to see in the world". It is if we are all individually the centre of the universe, or conversely that the existence of the universe is for each one of us directly related to our existence.
How we feel, how we are and how we relate to anyone and everyone we meet actually is important, it does actually make a difference to each and every person that we each come into contact with. It is something that each of us has personally experienced. The surly, indifferent shop assistant, taxi driver or civil servant does affect us. We feel in some small way feel alone, small, abused, or insignificant.
Conversely, the shop assistant, taxi driver or civil servant that goes out of their way to try to help you , or supply you with what you need, makes you feel that you are valid, important, or at the very least someone deserving of their best shot, their best efforts. This does have the effect of making us feel good or at the very least a valid member of the human race. Yes?
So what can we do, how can we go about changing ourselves, uplifting those that we come into daily contact with and not adding to their burden? We can only really be as we are, as we feel, (unless we are very good actors). So first we must love ourselves, be grateful and thankful for the opportunities and possibilities that being alive gives each of us.
Each of us likes to be treated with respect, yes? Each of us want to feel that our life is important, our opinions as valid as the next guy and our point of view at least worth a consideration, yes? The world is at a crossroads, we exist at a crucial time. The very fact that we each have a life now and at this moment in time must be relevant. If we can each one of us, be a force of good, of positivity, it can make a very positive difference and is this not the moment for positive change?
Who else can make a change? The politicians? If you really consider the reality the politicians now follow, not lead the people. It is how they retain their positions of power. They can only remain in power by offering people what they want, not what they need. The church, religion, seems to have become marginalised and of touch with the people, so from where will come the inspiration, or leadership? As so often it comes down to us, every thinking and aware individual to make their stand and make a difference.
It really is such a simple thing, but normally people do respond positively to a smile and an open and friendly disposition and very frequently will respond in kind, so the effect is often two way. The human memory is a little like our benevolent friend, we usually forget very rapidly negative experiences (unless super negative), but conversely our positive and enjoyable experiences will often linger within our memories for quite some time.
So, if you would like that people react favourably with you and are friendly and helpful in their dealings with you, take the initiative. " Be the change you wish to see in the world".

Top-level comments on this article: (5 total)Greetings Terrence -You have another fan. Your writing style engages. There is desire for more because of how you say it.Thankyou Sandra, I appreciate your support. I write what I see, what I feel. I feel like one of those guys that is paid to stand in the road with a red flag warning oncoming trafic of danger ahead and it is heartening to know I am not alone.
The chaos theory is alive and well in all things. I agree with much of what you say. Like you, I believe in a Higher Power, but the institutions of church and religions in general are fast becoming irrelevant. Politics and the overridding need for funding has taken over their message. Thanks BobIf ever there was a time for wisdom and spiritual guidance, now must be the moment, but as you say there is no one fulfilling this need, or if there is I must have missed it!
I think that's a wonderful quote by Ghandi, Terrence, and I enjoyed your article, thanks. I think "being the change" is the best way to inspire others to do the same. Its really astonishing to me that really such simple, such obvious solutions exist for so many of our problems. Why do we always seek the complicated, sophisticated answer? We cannot see the wood for the tree`s and seem to prefer it that way!
Hi Terrence.Very nicely written. Very well expressed. I've seen for myself how a smile and a helping hand can turn someones sour expression right around. We should all get on board with this. Thanks.DianneWe make our lives so complicated, closed and intense and then we wonder why we are not happy! Essentially we are all a little crazy I think.......My husband has said that for years and I am not inclined to disagree with him. Some of us are just a little crazier than others. If sanity is the status quo, add to to the crazies list!
You're very right. It's good to be reminded how much difference we can make. Be it ever so small.Glad you agree and like the tiny snowball that rolls downhill, the differences added together can become very big indeed!
