Lessons In Life, A New Start?

Given the mountain of problems facing human kind right now including the very dangerous damage that we are inflicting to mother earth perhaps it is time to evaluate and question what we should be teaching our children?

Lessons in Life

Why do we have to teach ourselves the most important aspects of life? This is something that I have never quite understood and I find it increasingly strange that given the problems that we the human race are currently experiencing, an increasingly strange over site.

Ok, now I am nearly as old as the hills and maybe education today is more rounded and complete, but I fear not much so. No it seems the emphasis remains much the same, how to equip our children to take on meaningful employment and how to teach them to become a useful cog in the machinery of civilisation.

I would like to suggest some additions to the educational agenda and top of the pile must be how to keep our home clean, our big home, mother earth. It has become increasingly obvious that this is an issue that has been sadly and perhaps dangerously overlooked and until relatively recently we assumed the seas and skies so vast that we could dispose of any amount of rubbish we wished into them.

Only in recent years has it become increasingly apparent that that is not and never was the case. Reversing the habits and assumptions of generations is not going to be easy given that the very lifestyles that have evolved for most of us have evolved from these assumptions and very radical changes and lifestyle overviews are going to be needed and needed very quickly. Children are by their very nature the most open to learning and absorbing new information, so hopefully with some educational guidance these changes could begin with them.

Human relationships and how to sustain them are another glaring omission from the current educational system. How many hours for the average child are devoted to acquiring an understanding of numbers and mathematics ? How many hours are devoted to achieving a stable and loving relationship in which to raise a family? It is strange is it not that such an important aspect of civilisation is left to us individually to work out. Divorce and ruptured families and households has now reached epidemic proportions in many countries of the world and what will the fall out be from this? Clearly sustaining a family and a relationship needs determination and work, but equally clearly the grass is rarely greener elsewhere and statistically second and or third marriages often have no more success than the primary marriage.

The last but no means least glaring omission from our educational systems in the west is contentment, peace and happiness and in many ways the two issues covered above stem from this. How to achieve it? Now in many ways it is much easier to describe what will almost certainly not achieve it and greed, materialism and partner changing are close to the top of the list. Now arguably Religious teachers should be filling the role here, but certainly in the west that is not happening. Peace and contentment are feelings, that come from within us and we each of us have to discover that individually, but for sure it would be very helpful if as part of the educational package there could be guides!

These subjects should be compulsory, and should come first, I think!

Thankyou for your comments Jennifer, we seem to share many ideas and beliefs. Yes it is strange that we should delegate these issues to the not so important basket....

Respectfully I do agree with your stats and observations regarding these problems, I do wonder should not the relationship issues be more properly addressed in the home? Again, no insult intended, just an observation.

Yes a very valid point, but given the number of broken homes now, which parent will be the teacher and how much credibility will they have? No I agree very much with your suggestions, but whilst that might have been the natural way one hundred years ago, the elders of the family sharing their wisdom with the young, that family structure has fallen apart. In many ways it is a pity.
